1. Chicago, Illinois: Smart Grid, Free Wi-Fi

The city of Chicago, Illinois has embarked on several smart-city initiatives. One of which aims to modernize the city’s electricity infrastructure by upgrading the existing power grid with advanced digital technologies.

The smart grid technology will enable better management of electricity distribution and consumption, reduce power outages, and improve the overall energy efficiency of the city. The program includes various initiatives such as installing smart meters, upgrading substations, and implementing a communication network to enable real-time monitoring and control of the power grid. The should provide cost savings, improved reliability, and environmental sustainability.

Additionally, the City of Chicago, Illinois, in collaboration with the Chicago Park District, plans to offer free Wi-Fi access in selected parks, particularly in areas where Internet connectivity is limited or unavailable, to enhance residents’ ability to connect to the Internet. Additionally, the City intends to work with community organizations to raise awareness of opportunities to boost Wi-Fi access by setting up access points in their localities.

2. Racine, Wisconsin: Smart Shuttle Bus

The city has implemented a smart shuttle bus, dubbed the Racine Badger that uses sensors and GPS to provide a driverless experience. The initiative is experimental, but the goal if implemented at scale would be to reduce traffic incidents and deaths relating to reckless driving.

The potential benefits of autonomous vehicles are being praised by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, with Secretary Craig Thompson highlighting their potential to drastically reduce traffic fatalities. Thompson believes that autonomous vehicles have the ability to sense and avoid collisions with other vehicles and pedestrians, potentially reducing accidents to zero. He also noted that some newer cars already have features like dynamic cruise control and lane-keeping assistance.

While acknowledging the rise in reckless driving in Milwaukee, WI and other cities, Noyce, a spokesperson for the department, believes that autonomous vehicles could operate in a safer manner than some human drivers. He hopes that the system will be able to ensure that vehicles obey traffic laws and avoid reckless driving. The department plans to use the new experiment in Racine to further test the capabilities of autonomous vehicles.

3. Minneapolis, Minnesota: Data Sharing and Visualizations

The city of Minneapolis, MN has implemented a solution referred to as “DataSource”. It is the city’s objective to knit together all the data that the city collects and present it to city stakeholders using data visualization. This includes things like visualizations of air quality against a map of Minneapolis. The main objective of this would be to help city leaders make more informed decisions.

Data is pulled from various city agencies and services including those that deal with elections, air quality, housing, and community safety. These data points are then presented back using software like Tableau.

4. Saint Paul, Minnesota: Smart Meters (Xcel Energy)

Xcel Energy, a St. Paul, Minnesota-based energy company will be installing smart meters in Minnesota homes. The purpose of the smart meters is to provide more accurate and timely data on energy usage, which can help customers manage their energy consumption and save money on their bills.

There will be several benefits that the smart meters provide. For example, they can automatically send usage data to Xcel Energy without the need for manual readings or visits to the home. They can also detect and alert the company to power outages, which can help speed up restoration times.

There are some concerns however, such as whether these meters can be hacked, emit harmful radiation, or invade privacy. Xcel Energy assures customers that their meters are secure and safe, and that they will not collect any personal information beyond what is necessary for billing and energy management purposes.

5. Iowa City, Iowa: Smart Meters (MidAmerican Energy)

MidAmerican Energy’s installation of additional smart sensors in Iowa City will be part of the company’s efforts to modernize its power grid. The sensors are part of a larger network of devices that can monitor and analyze energy usage, detect outages, and respond to changing conditions in real-time.

The new sensors will be placed on utility poles and other equipment throughout Iowa City, allowing MidAmerican Energy to gather more detailed data on the performance of its grid. The data can be used to identify potential problems before they become major issues, and to optimize energy delivery to meet changing customer needs.

The new sensors are part of a larger trend towards the use of “smart grid” technology in the energy industry. Smart grids use advanced sensors, communication systems, and software to create a more efficient and reliable power system.

The addition of new sensors in Iowa City is just one example of the company’s commitment to using technology to create a more resilient and sustainable energy system.

6. Rapid City, South Dakota: Smart Parking Meters

New parking meters in Rapid City are now up and running. The new meters are part of a larger project aimed at modernizing the city’s parking system and making it more user-friendly for residents and visitors.

The new meters are solar-powered and feature a digital display that shows the remaining time on a parking session. They also accept a variety of payment options, including coins, credit cards, and mobile payments. In addition, the meters are connected to a centralized system that allows city officials to monitor parking usage and make adjustments as needed.

The new meters represent a significant improvement over the city’s previous parking system, which relied on older meters that were prone to malfunctions and difficult to use. The new meters are expected to be more reliable, efficient, and convenient for drivers, while also generating additional revenue for the city.

7. Fargo, North Dakota

On October 22nd, 2022, officials broke ground of a new facility for agricultural technology innovation in North Dakota. The facility, which is being developed by Grand Farm, a nonprofit organization focused on advancing agriculture through technology, will serve as a hub for research, development, and commercialization of new agricultural technologies.

The facility will feature state-of-the-art equipment and laboratories, as well as space for startups and other innovators to collaborate and test their ideas. It will also serve as a training and education center for farmers, agronomists, and other professionals in the agriculture industry.

By fostering innovation and collaboration, the new facility could help farmers and other stakeholders to address some of the key challenges facing the industry, such as climate change, food security, and sustainability.
