Unplanned downtime can lead to massive financial and reputational losses. According to Gartner, the average cost of downtime is $5,600/minute. A disaster recovery plan is an essential tool for businesses that want to minimize the impact of a disruptive event such as a natural disaster, cyberattack, power outage, or other unexpected event. Here are some key reasons why you need a disaster recovery plan:

  3. Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPOs): Establish RTOs and RPOs for each critical system and data to ensure that they can be restored within the required timeframe, with the least amount of data loss.
  4. Backup and Recovery: Develop a backup and recovery strategy that includes regular backups of critical data to a secure offsite location, and testing of backup restoration procedures to ensure their effectiveness.
  5. Recovery Procedures: Develop detailed procedures for restoring critical systems and data, including the sequence of steps, the required resources and personnel, and the communication protocols.

Developing a Disaster Recovery Plan

Writing the plan out alone is one thing, but really a Disaster Recovery Plan should be an organizational practice that includes major stakeholders of the company. Formulating the plan should be with the collaboration of others and a team effort. By involving others, you will be able to gain agreement on things like RTOs and RPOs and manage the expectations properly if a real disaster were to occur.
