Minnesota is a state in the northern United States that has a rich history of technology development. The state has been home to some of the world’s most significant technology companies, including 3M, Control Data Corporation, Cray Research, and Medtronic.

Pre-Colonialism Technology in Minnesota

The earliest known technology developed in Minnesota was the use of fire by Native American tribes for warmth, cooking, and other purposes. The Dakota people were the primary inhabitants of the area and developed their technology based on the natural resources available to them.

New World Technologies in Minnesota (1800s)

In the mid-1800s, the logging industry emerged in Minnesota, leading to the development of technologies such as sawmills, railroads, and steam-powered equipment. This led to an influx of people to the state, bringing with them new technologies and innovations.

Early 1900 Tech in Minnesota

In the early 1900s, Minnesota became a center for the medical device industry. In 1949, Earl Bakken and his brother-in-law, Palmer Hermundslie, founded Medtronic, a medical technology company that developed the world’s first battery-powered pacemaker in 1957. Today, Medtronic is one of the largest medical technology companies in the world.

1950s-2000 Technology in Minnesota

In the 1950s, the computer industry began to emerge in Minnesota. Control Data Corporation (CDC) was founded in 1957 by William Norris, who had previously worked at IBM. CDC became one of the world’s leading supercomputer companies, producing systems such as the CDC 6600, which was the fastest computer in the world in the 1960s.

Another notable Minnesota-based computer company was Cray Research, founded by Seymour Cray in 1972. Cray Research was known for developing some of the world’s most powerful supercomputers, including the Cray-1, which was released in 1976.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Minnesota also played a significant role in the development of video game technology. Ralph Baer, who grew up in Minneapolis, is credited with creating the first home video game console, the Magnavox Odyssey, in 1972. The game was a huge success and paved the way for the modern video game industry.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Minnesota continued to be a center for technology innovation. One notable company that emerged during this time was 3M, a manufacturing company that developed a range of technologies, including Post-it notes, Scotch tape, and a range of medical and dental products.

The state also became a center for telecommunications technology, with companies such as ADC Telecommunications and Norstan Communications developing cutting-edge networking and telecommunications systems.

Today’s Technology in Minnesota

Today, Minnesota continues to be a hub for technology innovation. The state is home to many large companies using high-tech, including Best Buy, Target, and UnitedHealth Group. In recent years, the state has also become a center for renewable energy technology, with companies such as Xcel Energy and 3M developing new technologies to harness wind and solar power.

Minnesota’s history of technology innovation is a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of the people who have called the state home. From the earliest use of fire by Native American tribes to the development of the world’s most powerful supercomputers, Minnesota has been at the forefront of technology development for centuries. As the state continues to grow and evolve, it is sure to remain a center for innovation and creativity for many years to come.
